They trained these women to shake their bottoms and their tops into the screen and laugh and giggle when they were pushed, shoved and had liquids poured over them. Oh yes, in this far away land, many of these women became proud of what they learned. They claimed that they were the best around. Miss 'I can pout my lips farther than you' and Miss 'I can stare into the camera lens with my sexy eye look longer than you'. This land did not have many entrepreneurs either. There were no shops to make clothing, thus the women had to go around practically naked. There were no schools, thus the women talked/sang stupidly and eventually just went mute.

Ladies and Gentlemen, it saddens my heart to say that after some recent research, I find that this land of such people are becoming extinct. I would have to explain so many things in detail to ensure that you really feel what I'm saying. So, I'll give you a very short version :

This man is an ICON. That's a reason to market yourself better.

Here's my list :

Jae Millz
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 133px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ALD-q0Ny1h4/TX4sg-JhSdI/AAAAAAAAAOI/qpU6fowDlC0/s200/jae-millz.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5583949532936358354" />

J. We've seen this formula many times. By becoming a featured artist on a more established person's song, only then can that singer get the credibility and clout that will drive them to their 15 minutes of fame. How they get those connections, I don't know. But, I often see the rise before the storm and right now, I'm seeing another rise.

If you look back at another post I did a thousand years ago, I spoke about Jeremih and his "Birthday Sex" song. It was cute and catchy and he reminded me of P.Diddy (looks-wise). And while he has done some other small things in the meantime, his new collaborations are what is going to make him more successful. Thanks 50. Sometimes, you have a spark here and there...

Other people who have fallen into this category, of becoming more famous thanks to their high-profiled features, were:

Trey Songz
Lloyd
Ne-Yo (after the songwriting, his features is what put him in front)
Bobby Valentino
T-Pain (does he really count as R&B?)
John Legend
Bruno Mars (new to the list)(but still gained come-up due to features before his songs)

Upgrade from Bologna...

I don't know that I'm excited for a Jay-Z / Kanye West collaborated album...I don't know that I even care. They may not understand why, but they are surely aware. Moving on...I am happy that she is coming out with another album but very upset that I have to wait until June.
Actually, this release seems fairly quick since her personal life has been splattered all over the music media. Yes, just like the good entertainment industry that you are (patting them on the head and rubbing their bellies).
Since she is one of my favs, I would like to add my opinion on the morbid topic of interfering with her personal life - I wish she and Nas could have stayed together, but if you gotta go, then you gotta go. No one can truly understand what happened other than those two. As far as baby Knight, perhaps his mom was malicious in the way she got her child support, or perhaps we will never know and should stop speculating and calling names.
On another note...this new album is taking a different approach (which she always tries to do anyway) and going with a "club, techno" sort of sound (my opinion and not her description). I like it.

A thousand years ago Kelis did an interview and said "my job [as an artist] is to bring you things that you don't even know you like yet". Completely true. Other artists (cough) have blatantly taken her fashion style and some have emulated her music style (notice I didn's say singing).

Well, I guess I am supposed to enjoy the following single until then. BTW - I have "They Say" with her and Kid Cudi but couldn't find an embed for you. Instead, I'll keep rocking it in your name...

I like a little LYKKE LI with a side of other things

I'm so sorry for not updating you with this the moment I pumped it into my headphones. I simply forgot. Well, I randomly thought about it last night and decided to let you experience this greatness (if you haven't already - because it came out on Drake's So Far Gone EP, 1,000 years ago).

Lykke Li is a Swedish Indie singer, with a weird but awesome voice. Her first album is called "Youth Novels" and was released here in the U.S. in 2008. Just be you man...even if you want to be loud and the center of attention as far as style, it can be done with a little bit more respect for your wardrobe...

Beyonce - no jewelry

Rihanna - no makeup

LeBron James - solid colors

Justin Timberlake -style without flashiness

Taking it Back!!!

Today, on my drive home, something unusual happened to me. I was warped back in time. No, not really but it was a blast from the past when I heard "Walk it Out" by UNK, on the radio! (yeah I know it wasn't THAT long ago but it seemed like it). I was so intrigued by how "catchy" the song was that I couldn't help running on here to post one of my favorite YouTube videos. These old gals are really kicking it, especially the one in the middle. If you haven't heard (or were sitting under a rock), Beyonce was "inspired" by this for her Single Ladies video.

The Art of Music

“I've never believed in God, but I believe in Picasso.” This quote comes from the mouth of painter Diego Rivera. Not all will agree with his religious stance but how he summed up the overall impact of art cannot be opposed. For some, it can be bigger than religion. It can be the basis of their everyday inspirations. The same goes for music and it’s affect on a person’s life. People rely on architecture, paintings and sculptures just as they would melody, style and harmony to invoke their creativity; Two separate and historical styles of expression making their own little watermark on the world. However, thanks to the influence of such prominent people as Kanye West and Pharrell Williams, both art and music have woven together once again to make uniqueness a necessity.

The 1960s is arguably the period when art as a craft and the musician’s involvement emerged. What floats in the forefront of my mind are Andy Warhol and his infamous pop culture paintings of Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley. Not until this time, did these elements change an entire culture just by being together. In today’s interpretation, there are twice as many singers and rappers that collect fine art, collaborate with painters and sculptures and even dabble in artwork themselves. As a brief example, rapper/singer Kanye West has proclaimed himself to be a huge art advocate. Instead of pursuing his Art Degree from the American Academy of Art in Chicago, he sought after his second dearest passion: music. This didn’t stop his love of modern art or his need to be a part of it. For Kanye West’s 2009 album, 808’s and Heartbreak, an art god named KAWS did the re-created art cover of the album. KAWS is an artist notoriously known for mastering the unification of fine art with high-street products. With his imagery and Kanye’s fearlessness, it wasn’t surprising that the album cover was posted on one of the largest billboards in New York City.

Sometimes it’s not enough to just show art and music’s collaboration efforts, it may be necessary to put yourself smack in the middle. I’m referring to rapper/singer Pharrell Williams and his “Perspective” designs, which were on display at the Emmanuel Perrotin Gallery in Paris until January of this year. Pharrell joined prestigious French furniture maker Domeau & Pérès for the concept of a chair that represented the love between a man and a woman. If Mr. West’s album art and Mr. Williams’ chair models aren’t great examples of one creative outlet inspiring another, then I must be lost on what is.

It is absolutely clear that the emerging generation of musicians and artists are crossing all boundaries without hesitation. My last and most important example is Artst Guild & Gallery. This website, designed by Steve King, is the Mecca of premier painting, sketching, sculpting, writing, recording, syncopation, and vocals. Everything. All of it, wrapped inside of an online community where artists meet, share work and collaborate. Our culture has always thrived from individuals breaking rules and setting their own. It wouldn’t be a Kanye, KAWS, or Pharrell if the risk takers didn’t find a need to be original. Their latest creation, inspiration or passion will always be embraced from within. So, I pose the question – What is your religion? What is bigger to you than life itself, Art or Music? The road to being unique should know no bounds.

Where Do these People Go?

I caught a great video on tv today. It had too many big words and sounded too professional. Nevermind my content, nevermind that we had the same opinions on almost every entry, and nevermind that she and her friends check in periodically to see if I will update more often. What is that about? I guess I should try to dumb down my thoughts right? Because it's not as if I write from my head, in the manner that I already speak, oh no, I would have to write that way, then revise to sound more slang-ish. Because ultimately it's being in excess that is the problem. However, I have to reveal some of my dangerous obsessions in order to show how dangerously pleasant they can be.

1. Vashtie - she is a seasoned video director / fashion designer / slash, slash, slash. I have been following her works for a couple of years and it seems the WORLD is just now recognizing her talents. Good deal. Check out her blog, Vashtie.com

2. Book TV on C-Span2 - I love reading and I love writing. This show has me mesmerized every weekend. It just amazing to see all of this disregarded knowledge just floating in front of us on the boob tube.

3. The "New" rat pack - I mean Kanye, Lupe, Pharrell. Not Lil Wayne, Jay-Z and T.I. (just because they called themselves this at an award show). Don't get me twisted, I like those artists but KLP are really pushing some buttons. Good ones too. Kelis once said that her job as an entertainer is to bring you things that you don't even know you like yet. I think they have picked up on that quote and made it their mission.

This is just a super mini list of some of my obsessions. If I told you everything, then we would have to enter into a contract binding agreement in which I end up saying, "I do".

Kid Cudi kicking it in his Yeezy's

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 234px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_sfHCr6L2W30/SP_hwfDc0wI/AAAAAAAAACE/cZs1h2uYYyg/s320/3106_f25fafce50eb952134518bbf8f6056aa.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5260171112877970178" />
I love Kid Cudi. Then Ms. Katy Perry comes around the block with her hit, "I Kissed a Girl". In my weird, absorbent memory, I thought that she looked exactly like the cute little average chick from the GCH video. Even when the rumors began circulating a few months ago about them...eh...still ignored it. I just stored this info in the back of my brain and lo and behold, it came back to the forefront today. The cream of the crop when it comes to rapping, producing and overall being influential. The biggest buzz since each of their debuts and everyone is anticipating their collaboration. Pharrell Williams, Kanye West and Lupe Fiasco. The Internet ran amuck when Kanye spilled "Us Placers" on his mixtape, then Youtube caught the bug when Vashtie made her infamous underground video for it. They have now released a so-called "second single", which I'm sure will be on the album as well. It's the remix to N.E.R.D's "Everyone Nose". The calculating numbers that this video has already seen is just further proof that the world is impatiently waiting.

What is disconcerting to me is that each of these geniuses have too much current success to sustain and contain themselves in an album. Maybe Lupe is a little different. We haven't seen as much of his personality yet, to determine his behavior patterns. However, Kanye has been frequently labeled as "selfish" and Pharrell is known to be "Mr. Spotlight". It may be wrong to stereotype and label people, especially ones that you don't know well enough to do so, but I think I'm safe in saying that these descriptions are not far-fetched. Developing a group, knowing these classic symptoms are going to exist, is really tricky.

They may not be trying to develop an actual "group" per se but really just one great, unique, freedom of expression album. We will not know anytime soon, since no one but Lupe has been promoting the group. (If you look up anything related to CRS, even the official website, it is centered around Lupe's role) I guess we can only enjoy the two songs for now, stay up on anything else released and hope for the best!

Where are they Now...and other questions

Where is Chico DeBarge?
What is up with De La Soul?
Didn't Big Boi of Outkast remind you of Phife Dawg from A Tribe Called Quest when he first (first) came out?
Speaking of De La Soul and Tribe Called Quest, isn't CRS just a newer, replica of those back packers?

Sidebar : Do you think Solange can come out with another hot single after "I Decided"?

I loved Christion, why is Ghetto Cyrano so underrated?
Remember Bone Thugs -N- Harmony at the 1996 MTV awards, when they sung "Crossroads" and brought that scary, white coffin and horse on stage?
Where is Raheem from Juice?
Remember Lisa Loeb's song "Stay"? She will be coming through loud and clear any moment now. Born, Mathangi “Maya” Arulpragasam, this Sri Lanka/British songwriter, producer and vocalist is finally getting her respect due from the hot track “Paper Planes”, which is featured on the almost famous movie, Pineapple Express. Although her second album titled “Kala” was released in August 2007, time cannot be stamped on success.

“Sometimes I feel like sitting on trains, every stop I get to, I’m clocking that game Everyone’s a winner, we’re making the fame, bonafide hustler, making my name.”

M.I.A. (meaning Missing In Action) is already set to make a name for herself and she has been a bonafide hustler since birth. She is the daughter of Sri Lanki refugees, which show and proves some of her struggles. The question on most people’s mind, is where did this chick come from and what is she talking about? Since her debut album “Arular” in 2005, M.I.A. seems to have found an interesting way to melt politics within the lyrics of her music. She has taken the long route similar to Lupe Fiasco and Santogold, but is now coming to the realization that political and intellectual messages are only accepted when interwoven with mainstream and catchy beats. It also didn’t hurt that she is representing more of a Hip Hop feel with this particular song, “Paper Planes” and on the video as well. Thanks to the movie and the inevitable chain of word of mouth, the “Paper Planes” video is reaching over 7 million views on Youtube and cranking the rotation of MTV. Interscope knew what they were getting into when they signed her, even after the popular controversy of her passport and border issues, but I’m sure they weren’t expecting this. “Paper Planes” show you that M.I.A. is a chick that carries the same message under different hats and plays one game with different rules. Hip Hop music is about to get a refresher course on what it’s like to have your space invaded and if freedom of speech has anything to do with it, it is no longer missing in action. It is being reborn through M.I.A.

Some elements are made of Gold

Santogold is the chick when it comes to music. I like her aura and her philosophy, however, the new song "My Drive Thru" is not sitting too well with me. I had to post the video because it is awesome and creative and alot more words than I feel like typing. In addition, I also chose to post the recent interview that she and Pharrell did while shooting for Converse. Both of their answers to the various questions asked, gave me more respect for their vision. With this said, I still think the actual song is...well blah.

Music can make you Lose Control!

Musicogenic Epilepsy. In 2005, Stacey Gayle of Queens, NY discovered she was suffering from this condition after having brain and body seizures when songs like "Temperature" by Sean Paul and "Umbrella" by Rihanna were played. That minority group would be African American rappers and that prevailing culture would be Caucasians within the media. Musicians are expected to portray themselves in a specific way, even if this means dividing who they are as a person and who they are as rappers. I came across two videos of Jay-Z, demonstrating the perfect example of what it means to assimilate and divide at the same time. What I find interesting is that when he is on David Letterman, mostly viewed by Caucasians, he is the epitome of the "rapper persona": Baggy clothes, leaning to the side when sitting, cracking jokes, dancing when he comes out...yet when he appears on Tavis Smiley's program, he suited up and got his "professional" on. I'm not in any light a pyschologist but some would think that he is giving the "Caucasian" audience, exactly what they expect and then showing the African American audience how to "assimilate". Either way, his ability to switch up should show any aspiring musician how the pressures of the business can eventually cause you to change the way you view yourself as a person. It's all for the money...

Obsession

N.E.R.D does it again. After several minutes of scrolling, they came across a Memphis Bleek album. "Wow, you like this guy enough to buy his album?" As they continued scrolling they saw his second album listed as well, then his third, then his fourth, then some mixtapes. "What in the hell! I didn't even know he made these many albums!" They weren't saying this in a genuinely shocked manner, but rather a sarcastic and cynical one. "I actually like his music...a lot" was my response. Ever since that day and whenever there is a grouping or get together among friends, this particular person feels the need to bring this topic into conversation as a validation to my credentials on music. So, just in case there are other people in this world who do not understand why Memphis Bleek has sold more than two copies of his albums, I really do feel the need to explain why I and many others call ourselves a fan.

First, in no way do I deem Memphis Bleek an extraordinary lyricist. Truthfully, I frequent the blessed words of Jay-Z and Nasir Jones over anyone else. However, there are some songs on each of his CD's, in which he took a moment from smoking marijuana to actually make sense. (Recommendations at the bottom) With this said, I want to express that I buy his CD's not for words, but for beats and energy. Most of his songs are fast-paced and highly energized, with great hooks. He uses unfamiliar producers most of the time, so that I am not bored with one particular style or sound.

Second, yes he is just a back chair hype man. But face it, you know Flava Flav did his thing even though he was always in back of Chuck D. Spliff Star served his purpose behind Busta Rhymes and Freaky Tah was no one without Mr. Cheeks (R.I.P Tah). So, even if Mr. Bleek is more known for finishing the sentences of Jay-Z when they do a show, there are some people who see beyond that. I do not rank him in my top 10, 20 or even 30, but that shouldn't deter me from buying his album. Hell, if you want to get real technical I also have several Mase and Kris Kross albums. I happen to like some of their songs. That shouldn't define how well I can decipher a Common lyric or how I rank greats such as Eminem and Lupe Fiasco. But if that friend as well as others still believe my liking of Memphis Bleek is the determining factor of my being a music connoisseur, then I have no other explanation. Take it for what it is. But before you do, check out these songs with a wide open mind:

Regular Cat / Stay alive in N.Y.C - Coming of Age
Hustlers / Change Up / Is that your chick - The Understanding
We Ballin' / Hypnotic / Do It all again - M.A.D.E.
All about Me / Straight Path - 534

Voices in my head!

WIthout fail, every morning I awake to a song playing in my head. I have no idea how it got there and sometimes it is a song that I haven't heard in years. Each day I am excited to wake up and discover what voice my mind wants to be serenaded by. One particular morning I turned to my boyfriend (now husband) and asked him what song he awoke to that day. Now, I fully expected to hear him say that his brain station was on something like Rakim or Big Daddy Kane (he loves the old school rap). However, after a minute or so had passed and no response was given, I asked him again. "What? You were serious? I don't wake up with voices in my head, so no song was playing that I can remember." He said.
What! He didn't wake up to a song like I did? How many other people were deprived of this fantastic start to their day? I then took a survey of my parents, my friends, even co-workers. After realizing that no one had the same experience as I and after receiving tons of unsolicited advice to seek counseling, I determined that I wasn't crazy but unique.
This morning I listened to Jay-Z and Pharrell "I Know" while wiping the sleep from my eyes. Yesterday, Kelis' "Good Stuff" helped me make my bed after I jumped out of the covers. So, if I am the only person on this entire planet that hears voices in my head each and every morning that I awake...then dammit I'm just fine with that.

Diamonds are blinding

There is an undeniable expectation within the Entertainment industry that album sales are the only measure of success for an artist. Not your vision, not your inspiration, not even how well you sing or the amount of talent you possess. As saddening as this may be, what is most disturbing is that under this philosophy almost every hip-hop artist would be considered an underachiever. I say this because, having the most album sales equates to convincing 10,000,000 people to buy your album, thus reaching the Diamond status. Only three hip hop, or rap per se, artists have reached this level. They are: MC Hammer (Please Hammer Don’t Hurt ‘Em), Outkast (Speakerboxx/Lovebelow) and Notorious B.I.G. (Life after Death). It is uncommon, however, for other genres of music to achieve these numbers in album sales and when they do, it is not acknowledged as extraordinary, but rather “expected”. Artists such as Garth Brooks, the Dixie Chicks, N’Sync and even Britney Spears to mention just a small few, are among the ones who have gone “Diamond” and are considered successful. I’m sure I don’t have to mention that Michael Jackson, Prince, Elvis Presley and Billy Joel are icons that have undeniably sold enough albums to reach the Diamond status also.

Having your album go “Diamond” should be the new aim for hip-hop artists. After selling ten million or more, an artist is no longer an artist. They become a legend. There is no doubt, Hammer, Outkast and Biggie Smalls are legends, but we know there are other rap artists that deserve this title as well. Can three albums really represent the essence of hip-hop music, when they serve as the only representation among an elite variety of music? No. Not in my opinion. And if Diamond is the peak measure of success, then boasting about “gold and platinum plaques” and “having my album about to go multi-platinum” are just pointless and useless conversations that do not make rap artists stand out in a collection of musicians who strive for the highest level of music achievement. Since, there is nothing greater than the Diamond status…as of yet, it is the epitome of self-recognition as far as your talent goes, and the height of mass appeal. So, having only three rap artists in this category, to me, is actually insulting as a fan. Therefore, rappers worldwide need to step up their game. Make new achievements and set new goals for themselves. They should stop making music for a select few because as you can see, these select groups of people are not allowing them to reach “Diamond” in album sales. Gold, Platinum and multi-platinum are within the eye’s reach but Diamonds…they can be blinding to those who are afraid to strive for it.

DefJam Records -vs- Interscope

You know there's a saying...it goes like this: Get in where you fit in. This would be applicable to most things, such as choosing a record label, unless you are a Caucasian music artist, doing Alternative music, country or Soul Pop. If either of those applies to you, then you would be better off "getting in" on any label other than DefJam Records.

You see, you can't just jump on any label based on namesake nowadays. In today's money hungry society, you must research and choose a label that embodies success. Not small, mediocre success in terms of a Bobby Valentino or a Fabolous album, but the the large scale success defined by Gwen Stefani, Fergie and the likes of Maroon 5. I know at this point, you are thinking how can each artist even compare. Album sales...they cannot. But the main reason is due to what record label they are on. Follow me on this...Round One...

In the mid 1980's, I would have hopped, skipped and jumped to land a contract with a label such as DefJam Records. That was the home of Run-DMC, LL Cool J and later the mainstream success of Rocafella Records and Ruff Ryders. The difference is, circa 2007, music has evolved and rap music is no longer a fad. DefJam cannot monopolize rap artists. They became known for signing only rappers and only African American ones. This stigmata has not dissolved from their current operation. As much as they have tried to recently expand their brand of artists, it is still known as an African American label and as a hip hop label.

Alternative music has blossomed, R&B has blossomed and some other form that blends soul and pop music has taken shape as well (i.e. Robin Thicke, Black Eyed Peas). Yes, DefJam transformed their lineup to appear as though they were changing with the time of music, by developing Def Soul (R&B artists) and Island DefJam (where Janet Jackson recently signed). But this still doesn't put them in the running with other major labels that offer a one-stop shop of music variety. Round Two...

Now Interscope is definitely the one stop shop for your listening needs, from 50 Cent, Pharrell, Sheryl Crow to The All American Rejects. Alternative, R&B, Rap, you name it and they have a top selling artist to match it. DefJam, known as rap's home, is having a little trouble branching out into these other areas (despite the undefined Rihanna). This makes the label stagnant and not "in" with the changing sound. In order to sustain growth, you must venture, experiment and be willing to do what others are not. However, it is obvious that they are doing the opposite. Interscope Records has the marketing capacity now, to place any of their artists in any type of collaboration and still come out with success. All genres of music are folded under this label without any friction, competition or issues. So, as an artist I would encourage you to look at a label home where your music will be appreciated, have room to grow and you can be surrounded by a variety of influence as well. Sorry DefJam, but I think your one track mind is becoming a waste...and all of you DefJam fans...Lady Soverign, The Isley Brothers and Chrisette Michele do not count as versatility on that label. Just stop it already.
